How we count
Three rules keep these numbers honest: we pay for everything ourselves, we track every receipt the same day, and we never average in comped stays — because we don't take them.
Private room, mid-range guesthouse or small hotel. Hostel dorm and splurge figures noted inside each guide.
Three meals eating where locals eat, plus buses, metro and the occasional ride-hail. Airport transfers counted separately.
One paid entry per day on average. Free spots are flagged in every guide — they're often the best ones.
